Heliskiing in Canada – The Best Choice

Friday, February 19th, 2010

In the quest for ever-higher peaks, and endless vertical fields of fresh powder, extreme skiers don’t ride a chair lift or a gondola, they ride a helicopter. With heliskiing operations now available all over the world in many countries, advanced skiers have the possibility to access isolated terrain in every continent. However, Canadian heli skiing has the longest history of helicopter skiing operations, and arguably the best conditions you can find anywhere in the world. It is home to the majority of heliskiing and heli boarding operations on Earth. This is probably because British Columbia, Canada, has the perfect combination of terrain, climate, and precipitation that it’s needed for this kind of operations.

For those of you with Canadian heliskiing in their plans, the season in BC typically runs from January to early April. Whistler may offer some days in December, and other operators have been known to offer the Christmas and New Year’s weeks due to the high demand. Primetime is February, but January and March are also typically very good for heliskiing. Be aware that the late season can include so-called ‘corn snow’ in addition to, or instead of, fresh powder.

When planning a heliskiing trip, the size of the group and the number of groups per helicopter is also an important consideration you should keep in mind. Some of the bigger Canadian heliskiing operators use big helicopters that can accommodate 11 guest. Almost all of the boutique, smaller operators use the more maneuverable and more intimate ‘A-Star’ helicopters which hold 4-5 guests each. Small groups can access tighter terrain than cannot handle 13 sets of ski or snowboard tracks. Similarly, the number of groups carried by each helicopter can impact the quality of your experience. Larger helicopters servicing multiple groups typically experience wait time as groups move at different speeds. This can impact your ability to achieve the agreed upon vertical feet that the tour operator offers to provide you with over the course of the day.

Total travel time is another element of a heliskiing or catskiing trip that is often overlooked by people. Some of the most established operators out there require bus rides of 8-12 hours on both ends of the trip. This in an ironic contrast to the fast and convenient service offered by heliskiing. This doesn’t always sit well with the kinds of clients who can typically afford a heliskiing experience because nobody likes a 12 hours trip in a bus. But the thrill it’s worth the time.

And what is the cost of the ideal Canadian heliskiing experience? Most packages run anywhere from $800 to $1,100 per person per day, but it is a cost that is well worth it. This includes food, lodging, helicopter lifts, and apr?s ski hors d’ouevres. Alcohol is always an additional cost. Most packages include a guaranteed minimum vertical. Additional vertical feet are usually billed at $25-$40 per thousand feet.

A land of vast lengths and rich natural resources, Canada turned a self-governing dominion in 1867 whilst holding ties to the British crown. Economically & technologically the country has developed in parallel sustaining the US, its neighbor to the south diameter an unfortified edge.

Canada is the world’s second-biggest country by total region, occupying most of northern North America

Inhabited first by Aboriginal peoples, Canada was founded as a union of British settlements, occasionally of which one had been French settlements. Canada gained independence derived from the United Kingdom in an incremental process that began in 1867 and ended in 1982.

Canada is a federal constituent monarchy and parliamentary democracy, consisting of ten provinces & 3 territories, & defines itself as a bilingual and multicultural nation; both English and French are official languages. A technologically progressed & industrialized state, its diversified economy relies heavy on an abundance of natural resources and on trade, especially with the United States, by owning which Canada has had a long & mix relationship.

Canadian culture has historically been to a great extent influenced by English, French, Irish, Scottish & Aboriginal cultures and traditions, & over time has been greatly shaped by American civilization due to its propinquity and the interchange of human capital between the two countries. Many forms of American media and entertainment are popular, if not dominant in Canada conversely, Numbers of Canadian cultural products and entertainers are successful in the US and worldwide. Other prominent symbols admit the beaver, Canada goose, common loon, the Crown, and the RCMP.

Canada’s official national sports are ice hockey (winter) & lacrosse (summer). Hockey is a national pastime, and is by far the virtually all popular spectator sport in the country. It is also the virtually popular sport Canadians play, with 1.65 million active participants in 2004.Canada’s six biggest metropolitan areas – Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary, and Edmonton – have franchises in the national Hockey League (NHL), and there are additional Canadian players in the league than from all More countries compounded.

Additional popular Canadian spectator sports let in curling & Canadian football game (especially the Canadian football game League). Golf, baseball
, skiing, soccer, volleyball, & basketball are wide played at youth and amateurish levels, but professional leagues and dealerships are not as widespread. Canada will server the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup, & the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and Whistler, British Columbia.

Travel Insurance – Explained

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Travel Insurance is a type of coverage which can imply one thing, but can actually include several different coverages. For years, as I travelled back and forth to the United States by car, travel insurance to me, meant Emergency Medical coverage. There was no trip to cancel, interrupt, or delay, and I would be hard pressed to lose my luggage in the back seat or trunk of my car. However, if I were a frequent flyer for business, lost luggage or trip delay would be a lot more significant to me. As a Canadian, we have Universal Health care. Paying for medical services, or having to get private insurance to cover those costs, is not something we think about, except when travelling out of Canada. We should also think of it when travelling outside of our home Provinces.

Being in the insurance business has made me aware there is more to Travel Insurance than just Emergency Medical coverage. Although, that is pretty important, it is only one of the many types of plans available. Here is a list of what you should consider before you leave the country.

Emergency Medical

Look for a policy that has unlimited coverage in the policy wordings. Most Travel Insurance plans have some form of maximum or limit on claims. There are plans that don’t. Your plan should also have features that cover accidental dental coverage, medical evacuation, or return home costs in the event of hospitalization. Likewise, in the event of death, a repatriation benefit is important. If for some reason, you become hospitalized beyond your intended length of stay, find a plan with a benefit built in to pay for those extra nights of accommodation and food.

These types of plans can be purchased on a per trip basis or on an annual basis. Believe it or not, they are not as expensive as they seem. As an example, a family of four, parents aged 40, and two children under 6, can get this coverage on an annual basis for as little as $120.

Trip Cancellation & Trip Interruption

This type of coverage can be purchased either alone, or in addition to, Emergency Medical coverage. Your plan should cover the insured cost of your trip for both cancellation and interruption. Look for features that contain Emergency Early Return benefits, accommodation & meal benefits. Cruise cancellation is also available. This Travel Insurance plan is available on either a per trip, or annual basis.

Other Features

If you fly frequently, for business or pleasure, you may want to look into some sort of baggage protection. Whether it be for your laptop, files, or even golf clubs, it’s important your belongings arrive with you. Especially these days, with limited carry on’s allowed. If you frequent other countries, there is even a Passport Replacement benefit which can be added.

An Accidental Death or Dismemberment feature, to cover yourself while flying and 24/7 for the duration of your trip, anywhere in the world, may also be purchased.

Lastly, if you have friends or family coming to visit from another province, you should look into getting them coverage. Even if you travel within your own country, you may not have full coverage if something were to happen to you outside your own province.

International Student Insurance is important, I’d say critical, for anyone who is from a foreign country. It provides emergency medical coverage while completing studies in Canada.
